Cairo International operates through three passenger terminals, with an automated people mover linking the airport complex. Heliopolis is much more realistic than crossing Cairo on a layover, but immigration, terminal movement and unpredictable road traffic still require a wide protected return.
With less than 10 hours, stay at CAI. From 10–12 hours, a compact Heliopolis outing can fit if you can enter Egypt, your baggage is checked through and you reserve at least three hours for the road return, security and the correct terminal.
