Milan Malpensa Airport · MXP
Stopover in Milan: what to do and when to leave
Malpensa has two passenger terminals and sits well outside central Milan. Both terminals have rail stations, but the long trip to the city means a Duomo visit only makes sense on a genuinely long layover with baggage and entry formalities already resolved.
With less than 10 hours, stay at MXP. From 10–12 hours, the Duomo and Galleria can fit if you can enter Italy, your baggage is checked through and you reserve at least three hours for the train back, security and the correct terminal.

What to do during your stopover

Stay in your terminal
Use nearby food, rest or a lounge without adding a terminal transfer and two city journeys.

Malpensa without rushing
Keep the connection protected; central Milan is too far away for a reversible visit.

Duomo and Galleria
Take Malpensa Express and keep the outing to one compact central walking route.

Historic centre with margin
Add Brera only after fixing the return train and checking the departure terminal.

Frequently asked questions
Before deciding
Can I leave MXP during a layover?
Yes, if you meet Italy's entry requirements, your baggage situation is clear and you preserve enough time for rail travel, a possible terminal change, security and the gate.
Does the train serve both Malpensa terminals?
Yes, both T1 and T2 have rail stations. Confirm the current Malpensa Express destination and timetable because Milan services use different city stations.
What can I do on an 11-hour layover at Malpensa?
The Duomo and Galleria are the most controllable city option. Choose the return train first and aim to reach MXP at least three hours before departure.
