Flight basics, clearly explained

¿Qué es una escala?

Una escala es el tiempo programado entre dos vuelos de un mismo viaje. You stay at the connection airport until your onward flight departs.

Esto es lo que ocurre al aterrizar, lo que puede cambiar durante la conexión y cuánto tiempo podrías necesitar.

De un vuelo al siguiente

La anatomía de una escala

A layover is not empty waiting time. It is a sequence of airport steps, and each one uses part of the connection.

01

Aterriza tu primer vuelo

Taxiing and disembarkation happen before you enter the terminal.

02

Localizas la conexión

Check your gate, terminal and the route through the airport.

03

Completas los controles

Transfer security, immigration or customs may be required.

04

Sale tu siguiente vuelo

Be at the gate before boarding closes, with time in reserve.

Términos que suelen confundirse

¿Escala, conexión o stopover?

They describe related parts of a journey, but they are not always interchangeable.

01 / Time

Escala

The scheduled gap

The waiting period between arriving and departing flights, usually on one itinerary.

Often short and functional
02 / Action

Conexión

The change between flights

The process of moving from one flight to the next at an intermediate airport.

Can include security or border steps
03 / Extended stay

Stopover

A deliberately longer break

An extended stay that may be booked like an extra destination. Airline definitions vary.

Often 24h+ internationally

Durante la conexión

¿Qué ocurre durante una escala?

Your exact path depends on the airport, route, baggage and ticket, but these four checks cover most journeys.

01

Llegada

Leave the aircraft and check the airport screens for your onward flight and gate.

02

Equipaje

Confirm whether your bags are checked through or must be collected and re-checked.

03

Seguridad y frontera

Follow transfer signs and complete any security, immigration or customs steps required.

04

Embarque

Reach the correct terminal and gate before boarding closes — not just departure time.

Referencia de planificación

¿Cuánto debería durar una escala?

There is no universal minimum. Airport layout, border rules, ticket protection and terminal changes matter as much as the clock.

Menos de 1 hAjustada

Little margin for queues, terminal changes or a late arrival.

1–2hHabitual

Often workable for simple domestic or protected connections.

2–4hCómoda

A useful buffer for many airports and international transfers.

4–8hProlongada

Time to rest; leaving depends on entry and door-to-door timing.

8h+Escala larga

A city visit or hotel may be realistic after every check.

Use this as a planning guide, not a guarantee. Boarding closes before departure, and arrival time does not include taxiing, disembarkation or queues.

Aprovecha tu conexión

Tres formas de aprovechar una escala

Choose the simplest option that fits the time, rules and risk of your exact journey.

Short or uncertain

Permanecer airside

Rest, eat, work or use a lounge without adding immigration and transport risk.

Salir del aeropuerto

Only after checking entry, baggage, transport and your conservative return buffer.

Respuestas rápidas

Preguntas frecuentes sobre escalas

The practical details travelers most often need before a connection.

01What is a layover?

A layover is the scheduled time between two flights on one journey. You wait at the connection airport until your onward flight departs.

02Do you get off the plane during a layover?

Usually, yes. Most layovers involve leaving the arriving aircraft and moving to a new gate. On some through services you may remain on the same aircraft, so follow the crew's instructions.

03Do you have to collect checked baggage?

Not always. Bags tagged through normally continue to the final destination, but some countries, airports and separate-ticket journeys require collection and re-checking. Confirm the tag and process with the operating airline.

04Do you go through security again during a layover?

It depends on the airport and route. You may need transfer security, immigration, customs or all three. Follow official connection signs and allow for queues.

05Can you leave the airport during a layover?

Yes, if you are eligible to enter the country and have enough usable time for border formalities, transport, security and a conservative return to the gate.

06What happens if the first flight is delayed?

On a protected itinerary, the airline will normally assist with rebooking if the delay causes a missed connection. Separate tickets may not carry that protection, which makes a larger buffer especially important.
