Beijing Capital is a large two-terminal hub with long internal walks and a rail link to the northeast of central Beijing. A city visit only works when entry formalities, the Airport Express and a conservative return to the correct terminal are all protected.
With less than 10 hours, stay at PEK. From 11–13 hours, Beixinqiao and a compact hutong walk can fit if you can enter China, your baggage is checked through and you reserve at least three hours for the return.

Yes, if you meet China's entry or transit conditions, your baggage continues to the destination and you have enough time for immigration, rail travel, security and the gate.
How long does the Airport Express take?
The official route connects Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 with Dongzhimen and Beixinqiao. Allow additional time for immigration, the walk to the station, waiting and the final city transfer.
What can I do on a 12-hour layover in Beijing?
A hutong walk around Beixinqiao is more controllable than combining distant landmarks. Fix the return train first and be back at PEK at least three hours before departure.
